What are the main steps in developing a marketing plan?

Most companies that are successful have a marketing plan. The big companies in our society have a plan of hundreds of pages. But if your (still) a small company you don’t need a marketing plan of a hundred pages. A couple of pages with the most important things are enough.

In this post I will learn you how to make a short but powerful marketing plan with only the most necessary things in it. Grab a pen and paper or open a Word document. After you’ve read this post you can start right away.

After you’ve made the plan, the most important thing is that you take action. It doesn’t matter if your plan is perfect or not. The most important thing is that you take action after making it.

 Find a niche

Step 1

What niche are you in?

Begin with a big market, something like Health industry or Marketing and define it to your own niche market.

Example: Marketing-> internet marketing-> SEO

Example: wealth industry -> weight loss -> Losing weight without exercise

The more specific you are in your market; the better people will find your website and turn into customers. Of course, this is not the only thing that matters but this will be the fundamental of why costumers come to visit you instead of going to the competition.

Your website will be way more effective if you choose a specific niche. Go in depth instead of width. On the internet people are looking for specific products, specialists or services that can solve their specific problem or frustration.

Step 2

Who is your target audience?

I don’t know latterly who your targeted audience is, but what I do know is one thing… It isn’t everybody. If you think your product is for everybody, you are going to sell it to nobody. The reason why we say everyone is our targeted audience, is because we don’t know who our targeted audience is.

Sell or make a product that only your targeted audience can use. That way it would be more effective to the problem the product solves.

If you are in the health industry and you sell a weight loss program… Don’t sell a weight loss program, but sell a weight loss program for woman above 40 with children that got no time to go to the gym to exercise

One of the reasons why most people don’t sell is because they want to sell to everybody instead of somebody. Keep this in mind… Everybody is nobody in the marketing world.

Step 3

What are the needs of your targeted audience?

When you know your niche market and your targeted audience, you can search for the needs of your targeted audience. The needs are the results of the outcome of a product or service. If you know what they want you can use it in your sales page, e-mail marketing and even in your blog posts.

I will give you the needs of someone who wants to lose weight for example.

–          The person wants more confidence

–          Maybe he wants to be more attractive

–          He/she wants to be more athletic

When you are going to figure out what the needs are think about Tony Robbins six human needs; grow, certainty, variety, significance, connection and love and contribution

Step 4

What is the fear of your target audience?

This is the opposite of the need. This is what they don’t want to happen. In step 3 I gave you the example of someone who wants to lose weight. The things that he/she doesn’t want to happen are things like: Losing the attention of partner, gaining a lot of weight, not being able to do a sport or something like that.

A solution to a fear is more powerful than a solution to a need. Most people rather buy aspirins, then they will buy vitamin.

I don’t say everyone is like this but most people rather avoid the pain of lose then enjoy the feeling of win.

Step 5

Find the accepted frustration

An accepted frustration is something you do because there isn´t a solution for it… Yet. And you need to figure out what that solution would be for your niche.

An accepted frustration was downloading music to your computer and transfer it to your mobile phone. Until Spotify came with the solution. Pay me every month and I will give you access to our ´´music library´´.

The frustration of downloading and transferring was solved by Spotify.

So in other words: Find the frustration -> Make a solution -> Make it your product -> And sell it!

Step 6

What are your USP?

I think most people know what USP (unique selling points) is. But I think most people don’t know what their USP is.

This are the points that will define you from your competition and why people buy your product.

For example, take a look at the car market:

If I say Lamborghini, you will think about…. Speed.

If I say Tesla, you will think about… Auto pilot

These are USP’s. M&M’s came with the slogan: The chocolate that doesn’t melt in your hand but in your mouth.

This simple USP is what made M&M different than the other companies.

Now you know the six steps of the marketing plan ..

This will be the fundamental of your online business. If you have implemented this into your business, you will save a lot of time in the future.

After reading this blog post shut down your computer, get rid of your phone and no music. Just you a piece of paper and your mind.

You are going to get 6 pieces of papers and at the top of every paper you are going to write down the steps that I just explained you.

1.       Which Market I’m in (niche)?

2.       Who is my target audience?

3.       What are the needs of my target audience?

4.       Which pain does my target audience got?

5.       What is the frustration of my target audience?

6.       What are my USP?

What to do now?

  1. Get 6 empty papers in front of you.
  2. Write down on every paper one of the questions above.
  3. Now get everything that can distract you out of the room (phone, computer, Facebook and even this page).
  4. Set a timer for 30 minutes. Not use a clock but a timer that have an alarm. Use your phone but keep it in the other room or something.
  5. Now get the first paper and answer the question.

Example: Which market i’m in (niche)?

  • Marketing
  • Online marketing
  • Search engine

But every time you write down an answer, you put a bullet on to the next line so you will be forced to write down an other more specific answer.

6. When you can’t think of anymore answers, you go to the next question and do the same.

7. If you did all of the six questions within 30 minutes then start with page #1 again until the 30 minute alarm goes of.

But what is the right answer?

Mostly after the 10th answer you will get specific answers that would be the answer to the question. Use all the answer to create a nice specific answer.

Keep the focus until the alarm bell goes off. Just 30 minutes of focus and you will get great answers.
